I think some people see their membership in CRC as a greater aspect of their identity than being a disciple of Christ. This leads to unchristian conduct and unbiblical doctrines because they care more for their earthly church membership than their heavenly citizenship. So, I wouldn't say it is a matter of compensation because I believe the 'birthrighters' are acting with integrity; they are not intentionally nefarious; they are just mistaken.
